Blessing of the Animals which will be held on Sunday, October 6, 2013 at 4:00 p.m. at
Memorial Park in Lemoyne, Pennsylvania, located at the lower end of Herman or Hummel
Avenue. This event is open and free to the public.
The Blessing of the Animals is a worship service where people worship with the creatures
they love. People are invited to bring their pets of all kinds (dogs, cats, ferrets, snakes,
rabbits, fish, birds, gerbils, pigs and more) with their appropriate leashes and/or carriers.
During the service, each pet will receive a hands-on blessing from Rev. Diana Hodges-
Batzka, the senior minister of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). She says, “As a
dog owner, I know that pets are really family members. As a Christian, I know that God
loves all creatures. As a pastor, I know the power of worship and blessing in people’s lives.
With the Blessing of the Animals, our congregation is combining all three of these facts in a
delightful worship experience for the community – two and four legged alike.”
Rev. Hodges-Batzka, who has participated in Blessing of the Animals services in Richmond,
Virginia and Montgomery, Alabama, is excited to again lead this worship service for the
Central Pennsylvania community. She shares, “I have blessed dogs and cats, fishes and
snakes, and even rats and pigs. I am always excited to share God’s love for people and
animals alike. Last year, it was an honor to bless many wonderful dogs, including one who
was fighting doggie cancer.”
People are invited to bring a blanket or chair for their seating comfort. Waste bags and
water will be provided. “Blessing of the Animals” services are often held in conjunction
with St. Francis of Assisi’s feast day (October 4th) because of his love for all God’s creatures.
